The Amazon Corner
Gift Cards Gone: Amazon Experiments Pulling Local Store Availability
Amazon is making some changes to how customers can purchase gift cards, starting by pulling them from local stores in New York as an experiment. While some may be disappointed by this change, Amazon assures that gift cards are still available online and at Whole Foods locations.
This sudden change is speculated to be a response to reported cases of "card draining" scams where criminals have been cheating the system. As mentioned, Whole Foods (undoubtedly an affiliate of Amazon) still carries the gift cards and has seen a surge in demand since this news broke.
eBay Goes the Extra Mile: Expands Shipping to Puerto Rico
eBay has exciting news for sellers - they are expanding their eBay International Shipping (EIS) service to include Puerto Rico on July 29, 2024. This means increased sales opportunities and access to a wider audience with the same protections and benefits already in place. Sellers who are currently enrolled in EIS will automatically have their listings displayed to buyers in Puerto Rico, overriding any previous exclusions.
This move also hints at future plans to potentially add Hawaii and Alaska to the EIS program as well. With recent changes proposed by USPS (mentioned in our last C&C issue!) that may impact shipping costs for these areas, eBay's decision comes at a particularly opportune time for sellers.

Shopify in the Spotlight: 11.7% Increase in Stock
Investors of Shopify (NYSE: SHOP) saw a solid 11.7% increase in its stock in June, thanks to positive economic indicators for the e-commerce industry. While overall retail sales may have been slower than expected, the online sales and non-store retailers categories showed significant growth, benefiting companies like Shopify, whose business model relies heavily on e-commerce spending.
However, the Federal Reserve's decision to maintain interest rates caused some hesitation amongst investors, resulting in the stabilization of bond yields and a slight dip in Shopify's stock price. It seems that Shopify has solidified its position as a top stock pick for those looking to capitalize on the thriving e-commerce sector.
